Important Steps to Building Your Own Room Addition

Important Steps to Building Your Own Room Addition

Looking For a Local Contractor Fast?

January 15, 2007

Building your own room addition is a big project that requires a certain amount of skill and knowledge.  You don't have to know how to do every little thing, but you do need to know enough to bring in subcontractors where necessary.  The best way to be successful on a project such as this is to plan ahead and think through every step that needs to occur until the completion of the project.

The first step in building your own room addition is to develop specific, detailed architectural plans and determine all of the permits and inspections you will need along the way.  It is a really good idea to invest in professional architectural drawings because they provide the all-important roadmap that will guide the entire project.  With plans and permits in place you can start the actual work, such as locating underground cables and wires, digging footings, and preparing the foundation.

It is important to always be thinking several steps ahead when planning and scheduling construction activity.  Allow plenty of time for each portion of work so that you don't end up with multiple contractors getting in each other's way.  This also allows you the most flexibility in case one portion of the job runs long or does not go as smoothly as you anticipated.

Use a checklist to ensure you don't miss any steps and when you think of something that needs to be added you should do it right away so it is not forgotten.  Keep your checklist close and follow it faithfully because it is nearly impossible to keep track of all important details without one.  Building your own room addition is a big undertaking but the effort is worthwhile in the end.
