There is a simple to trick to avoid this. Put the new shake in a location that is inconspicuous and use the older shake to make the repairs.  Once everything is back in place you can carefully nail down any shakes that were loosened and the job is finished.

To avoid making more damage try to distribute your weight evenly on the sakes as you walk. Also, try to keep your tools close at hand so you don't have to move around any more than is necessary. You should only loosen or remove the shakes that must be moved in order to make the repair.  Knowing these basic steps and tricks of the trade will make it easy to know how to repair a shake roof.
