Find out the pros and cons of using granite tile for kitchen counters.

Granite is an elegant and beautiful natural stone.  Many people love the idea of using granite tile for kitchen counters. Still granite tile is very expensive and some often wonder if it is really worth the extra expense.  This is especially true since there are many types of countertop materials available today that offer the look of granite without the expense.  How do these alternatives compare with using real granite tile for kitchen counters?

Granite is a very durable natural stone.  Each piece has its own unique design and look.  No two pieces of granite are exactly alike. When it comes to durability using granite tile for kitchen counters is great. It's like having your entire countertop serve as a cutting board and a hotplate all in one.  Because granite is so durable, you can put hot dishes and some minor cutting on it.

Along with the higher cost of granite tile for kitchen counters, there is another factor that may increase the cost of your counters.  In many cases, the weight of the granite is too much for the standard cabinets.  Reinforcement must be done to accommodate the extra weight.  While this is not usually a major expense, it will cost more.

Countertop materials that imitate the look of granite tile for kitchen counters are much less expensive.  Synthetic solids are constructed to look like a single sculptured unit.  Even backsplashes can be incorporated so that it looks like there are no seams.  You can find synthetic solids that imitate the look of granite.

You can also find laminate with the look of granite.  Laminate for countertops is the least expensive type of material.  While you may have general look of granite, you will be able to tell the difference, because of the edging and seams required as you lay laminate.

Using granite tile for kitchen counters is quite an investment.  Still the investment will last well beyond the life of other items in your kitchen.  It is stain, burn, and scratch resistant.  Overall using granite is well worth the investment.
