Apply Roofing Underlayment in Your Home

Looking For a Local Contractor Fast?

August 16, 2007

If you are looking to apply roofing underlayment in your home, you are not the only one.  Many people are using roofing underlayment for a variety of purposes, not the least of which is preventing the spread of fire and extra insulation, not to mention noise reduction.  There are all different types of roofing underlayment, and all types are made differently and are installed differently, too.

Some types of roofing underlayments are rubber-based materials.  These are mostly used to prevent water leakage into your home if you have a shingle roof.  Other types of roofing underlayment, like gypsum, can be greatly reduce the spread of fire in your home should a fire break out in your roof.  If you live in an area that gets a lot of snow and ice, you will definitely want to consider hiring someone to apply roofing underlayment as this can decrease the damage that ice can do to your home.  Some people only add roofing underlayment to add extra insulation or to reduce noise in their homes, but this is not a common use.

Apply Roofing Underlayment

Some states and countries allow you to apply roofing underlayment that is termed "easy-to-use", as it is self adhesive and is simpler and more do-it-yourself friendly than other types of roofing underlayment.  These types have a special mesh that allows you to move the underlayment when you first put it down.  That way, you can correct any problems you may have on the initial placement.  Before you use this type of underlayment, check to be sure your state's building codes allow this type of underlayment.

Since the roof is the most important and difficult part of your home to fix and repair, it is always a good idea to hire a professional to complete projects and apply roofing underlayment for you.  A good rule of thumb is never to try to save money on the roof of your home.  A lot of damage can be done to your entire home because of a poorly constructed or repaired roof.
