Working With Your Painting Contractor

A big part of any successful remodeling project is knowing how to work with the various contractors you hire. Your painting contractor is just one of the people you depend on to do a quality job, so you should do your best to establish a good working relationship with him or her.

Now, this does not mean you should be overly friendly or too accommodating – after all, you are the customer and you deserve to receive good quality work. Remember, though, that your painting contractor is someone with a lot of experience in that field and likely has worthwhile suggestions and techniques for completing the job.

Talk with the painting contractor before any work starts to discuss colors, textures, finishes and paint types. Take advantage of his or her experience in things like covering over bright colors, bringing warmth to a room through color, adding texture and depth to walls, etc. It is also a good idea to talk about appropriate paint types and finishes for whatever room is being painted.

For example, if the room being painted is a kitchen or bathroom, your painting contractor will probably have specific recommendations for what kind of paint to apply. Their recommendations will likely be somewhat different, however, for a bedroom or for a high traffic hallway.

You should expect your painting contractor to show up on time and minimize the mess and disruption to your home as much as possible. If you are having exterior painting done the contractor should have sufficient tarps and covers to protect shrubbery and other landscaping and should also have the appropriate equipment, such as ladders, scaffolding and spray equipment for the size of the job at hand.

In general, working well with your painting contractor will leave you with a good quality job and a minimum of mess. You must be assertive when necessary, without crossing the line into being aggressive or unreasonable. The painting contractor will be most likely to serve you well if you approach the relationship from a position where the end goal is a mutually beneficial job.
