Looking For a Local Contractor Fast?

January 29, 2008

If you are looking install your own vinyl siding step by step, you might be surprised to find out how complicated it is.  Too often, home building shows make it seem simple, but for the homeowner without a lot of time, this is a much more extensive process.  But it's not impossible.  By recognizing that vinyl siding step by step is going to be a time consuming process with lots of small steps to take along the way, you can ensure your siding is done right the first time.

Vinyl Siding Step by Step

Vinyl siding step by step begins with ample preparation.  Remove all of the existing siding and check the wood that's underneath.  It should be smooth and free of rotting areas - if not, you need to replace the wood and solve the source of the moisture before you can install siding.  Next, make sure to fill in any cracks in the surface of the wood or at the corners to make sure no excess air gets into your home.  You may even want to install a thin layer of insulation before you begin to help improve the energy efficiency of your home.  The furring strips that came with your vinyl siding should also be installed at this time.

Installing vinyl siding step by step begins by putting up the edge pieces as well as the starter piece.  The starter piece is the one that helps to secure the rest of the pieces in place as you fill in the entire wall.  From there, you will want to leave about a ¼ inch gap between each of the adjoining pieces in order to give the pieces a chance to expand and contract with the weather changes - even if you don't think the weather changes that much.

Make sure to add a J channel to the areas around the doors and windows to help secure these pieces in place.  Just install the bottom pieces first and make sure any additional pieces will angle away from the surfaces to help moisture deflect away from the house.
