Surviving Your Home Room Additions

Surviving Your Home Room Additions

Looking For a Local Contractor Fast?

March 9, 2010

While there are numerous benefits from a home room addition, the building process can take an emotional toll on you and your loved ones if you're not prepared. Even if you are prepared, the gnash of saws, firing nail guns, and unsettling intrusion on your privacy can make even the most level-headed homeowner flinch. Of course, room additions are worthwhile in the end--if you can remember that the end's in sight.

Before you start, make sure you have paid enough attention to choosing your room addition plans. Does your design match the style, budget, size, and functions that you need in a room addition? Good. Now let's look at how to best tolerate the project.

First, it's best to understand right away that home room additions are as complex a project as building a small house. That means electrical, drywall, windows, floors, plumbing, and heating considerations must be addressed by your remodeling contractors.

What to Keep in Mind During Your Home Room Addition

After signing on with reputable remodeling contractors, it's time to release your tight grip on the reigns and let the professionals do their work. On the other hand, an addition can be a full-time experience, including weekends for some sub-contractors. That means it's up to you to schedule family outings or an occasional hotel or resort stay to get away from the hammering and jig saw.

Hold fast to your boundaries. Be sure the contractor orders a portable toilet in the yard for the workers, and even though one may ask for permission to use the home facilities, a single visit can turn into a parade of intruders in tool belts.

You also must protect your home and valuables from theft or damage. Be sure your remodeling contractor carries the necessary insurance as well as the required building permits. Move your most precious items to a home safe or bank safe deposit box. And stow items you usually keep in or near your yard in a locked garage.

If contractors start the project with the intention of working late hours on weekends or long into the night, nip those ideas in the bud. Get the hours stipulated in the contract and hold your home room addition professionals to their word.

Lastly, consider renting a room at a local restaurant or hotel to throw a party for friends that you may not see during the project. No reason to lose your social life over a home addition.
