A Kitchen Makeover You Can Afford

If, like so many homeowners across America, your budget has been squeezed by recent economic problems, you might think a kitchen makeover is out of the question. Think again. All you need is some time and a little imagination to achieve a kitchen makeover to make you proud.

Paint your Kitchen Cabinets

If you are happy with the existing layout of the kitchen and your cabinets are in good condition, painting is an effective low cost option.

  • Remove the cabinet doors and drawer fronts as well as the knobs and handles before you start painting.
  • Use a sander to remove the top layer of existing paint or lacquer.
  • Apply at least one coat of primer before you apply the new paint.
  • For a durable result, apply several thin layers of paint and allow each to dry before applying the next.
  • Finish with a coat of lacquer if you want a glossy finish.
  • Start on the least visible surface so you are well practiced by the time you paint the most visible cabinet doors.

Kitchen Cabinet Refacing

Another low-budget kitchen makeover option is to replace the drawer fronts and cabinet doors.

  • Make sure you order new drawer fronts and cabinet doors that exactly match the size of those you are replacing.
  • Cover all exposed parts of your kitchen cabinets with a veneer that matches the finish of your new drawer fronts and cabinet doors.
  • Use a self-stick veneer--it is easier to work with.
  • Trim the veneer carefully with a sharp blade.

Complete your kitchen makeover with new knobs and handles for your cabinets and drawers. Replace your drapes with modern blinds, or simply have your drapes cleaned. A good scrub of the whole kitchen, especially the tile, can work wonders!
