Interior Painting Like the Pros

If the interior of your home needs to be brightened up or just changed, you have come to the right place. Painting is as easy as one two three. Before you can begin the transformation you must prepare your room or rooms. Start by removing everything. You should also have a canvas or at least some plastic to cover the floor.

If you have nail holes or cracks that need filling in you will want to do this with spackling before painting. Paint also adheres better to a clean and dry surface. If you have rough spots that might need sanding you will want to do this before your room is wiped down. Take an old rag and dampen it with water to wipe off all the baseboards and areas with dust, dirt and cobwebs.

Next tape off all the areas that you do not want to get paint on. Some people find it easier to tape off the trim especially if you do not plan to paint it. If you are going to paint doors, the best thing to do is to remove the hardware.

Painting

If you are going to paint the trim, never start with painting the trim. Always paint the walls first. If the color of the room is currently dark and you want to paint it something lighter you should put a coat or two of primer on it to cover it up.

Preparation is the key to a smooth process. Painting does take plenty of time and patience so don't get in a hurry if you want it to look right. After the primer dries you can take the lid off of your new bucket of paint and start applying. Pay special attention to the lines that meet the ceiling if there is no trim there. If one coat is not satisfying, you may have to do a second one after the first one dries.

After the new coat of paint is dry you can lift the tape and apply all the hardware you removed. For a last finishing touch take some caulk and fill in the gaps in the trim that might be noticeable.
