Preparing for Installing Attic Insulation

Looking For a Local Contractor Fast?

May 22, 2008

The chilling feeling in your house has led you to believe that all is not well with your insulation.  The attic especially, seems to be a problem.  It's no big surprise to any homeowner that hiring a contractor to do maintenance work like this is a bit expensive.  While there is nothing wrong with seeking help when you need it, you are left wondering if installing attic insulation is really a task you should outsource or keep close to home.  Here are some basic criteria to consider while you decide if you are up to the challenge and some good tips for installation if you decide you can do it on your own.

Installing Attic Insulation

Before you run out and buy the supplies you think you will need to install attic insulation, ask yourself a few questions.  Have you successfully completed other household improvement projects without too much trouble?  Do you even know what kind and how much attic insulation you currently have?  Do you know to figure it out if you don't?  It's also important to determine if any structure changes are going to be necessary.  If you feel like you aren't up to the task, it might be time to call in the professionals.  If you feel pretty good about your odds on your own, it's time to gather your materials.

First on your list for installing attic insulation is deciding what type of insulation you want to use and how much you need.  While you are running around the home improvement store, make sure you get some safety goggles, gloves, and a respirator or dust mask.  You don't want to inhale any loose particles of insulation if you can help it.  Dress appropriately for your adventure as well.  A long sleeved shirt and long pants are essential.  Tuck your pant legs into your socks to further limit skin exposure to the insulation.  With these tips in mind, you are ready to add more attic insulation and be on your way to lower utility bills.
