Learn the basics of how to install a basement window and decide if it's a project you can handle, or if you should hire a professional.

Installing windows is a very difficult thing to do anywhere in the home.  If you have a preexisting window, all you really need to do is replace the existing window.  This would need to be done if the existing window is cracked or has a very bad leak.  Many homeowners can do a window replacement on their own, but they need to make sure that the window is installed correctly. If not, the window could leak and you could have the same problem all over again.  But the most challenging window project is knowing how to install a basement window.

How to Install a Basement Window

Knowing how to install a basement window is challenging because of where the window is located.  If you are doing a window replacement, you will need to find a new window that is the correct size for the window frame.  You will also need to find a window that is specifically made for a basement.  Basement windows tend to get a lot harsher treatment from the weather and the elements.  Water can pool against a basement window, so knowing how to install a basement window properly is essential to the integrity of your home.  Make sure the window seals properly against the window frame, and be sure the window is double paned glass.  Otherwise, you will leak heat and that wastes a lot of energy.

Choose the right type of window for your basement before you worry about how to install a basement window.  Glass block windows are a good choice for basements because they are blurred to create more privacy and because they are thick to keep heat in the house and water out.

Once you have chosen the type of window, you will need to know how to install a basement window.  If you don't have an existing basement window, it will be impossible to create one on your own.  Have a professional contractor come out and see if he or she can dig and cut a window into your basement.  You never want to attempt this yourself because it can, and probably will, compromise the structural integrity of your house.
