How to Find a Contractor that Knows How to Install Vinyl Windows

Looking For a Local Contractor Fast?

January 10, 2011

The time has come to replace your old windows and you've decided to give the vinyl replacement windows you're been seeing so many good reviews about a try. If you've never done a window replacement before, you may not know how important the next step in the process is, and that is finding a contractor who knows how to install vinyl windows.

Vinyl windows can be an excellent choice as replacement windows for your home, but if they are installed incorrectly, you may find yourself wishing you had your old windows back. Vinyl windows can improve your home's appearance and energy usage, but if you can't open and close them, you may not care about their many benefits.

Finding a Contractor Who Knows How to Install Vinyl Windows

Vinyl windows are installed using the same methods as wood, aluminum, or vinyl clad windows, but due to their construction they can be a little more sensitive to improper installation procedures. Vinyl windows should be installed according to the manufacturers' recommendations and care must be taken not to puncture the frame with fastening screws.

Vinyl windows should also be flashed properly to avoid potential water intrusion. Window manufacturers normally provide detailed flashing and waterproofing instructions, and it is important that the contractor you choose follow those instructions. Too much expandable foam insulation around vinyl window frames should be avoided to prevent possible problems with opening and closing.

Finding a contractor who knows how to install vinyl windows is often just a matter of looking in the right place. You should be able to find a contractor for your replacement windows by:

  • contacting vinyl window manufacturers for lists of preferred contractors
  • talking to your local building inspection department
  • asking local vinyl window distributors
  • asking friends and neighbors

You should always ask to see a completed project just to verify that the contractor knows how to install vinyl windows properly.
