How To Prepare Your Home for Sale

How To Prepare Your Home for Sale

Looking For a Local Contractor Fast?

June 23, 2010

Selling your home is a numbers game, especially in today's housing market. With lots of homes on the market and prices down, you need to make your home stand out from the crowd. Before you list your home for sale, you must make it as attractive as possible from the outside, or enhance what is called "curb appeal." After a prospective buyer is inside, that theme should continue.

Is Remodeling the Answer?

Home renovation or remodeling is one way to enhance the attractiveness of your home. However, you should think long and hard about the cost, difficulty, and return on investment for a major home renovation project. Simple things like a fresh coat of paint, inexpensive window coverings, cheerful flowerbeds, and a thorough cleaning can work wonders.

Make Your Home Look Like a Model Home

The biggest difference between a model home and your home is clutter. A model home has empty closets, modest amounts of furniture, no laundry baskets, no countertops overflowing with magazines and mail. At a fraction of the cost of remodeling, you can clear out that clutter and make your home look more like that model. Empty half the clothes out of your closet, clean out your bookshelves, and get rid of the countertop clutter. If necessary, rent a storage unit to store excess furniture and boxes of personal items.

Get Professional Help

There are now companies and people who specialize in something called "home staging." They can help you get your home looking its best, advising you on furniture arrangements, colors, plants, and everything else that can help make a prospective buyer salivate when they walk in the front door.
