For something different to spice up the interior of your home faux finishing is one of the most popular interior painting styles. The best part is it's easy to learn and can create beautiful and dramatic changes in your home.
Perhaps the easiest of faux finishing's interior painting styles is sponging. If you've never tired sponging, it's a good idea to practice and test on a sample board before beginning your walls. Sponging is a great choice to help camouflage blemishes and other small defects or problem areas. Regular painting will on accent these problems while sponging helps to hide them.
For sponging, you'll need to apply your base coat. Once that's dry, you'll begin by using a sea sponge dipped in paint to apply the sponging effect. Press lightly to produce a delicate impression, harder for a bolder, darker impression.

The type of tools you use to apply the paint gives a variety of interior painting styles. Other types of faux finishing are rag rolling, color washing, and feather dusting. Each of these can be accomplished much like the sponging. A base coat is always required for every faux finishing technique.
Combing and glazing are two other popular interior painting styles. If you're ready for more of a challenge, you may want to try one of these techniques. It's a bit more difficult than sponging, yet still a project that's do-able by non-professionals.
One word of caution, visit your local paint store or home improvement center to make sure you've made the proper selection of paint for the style of faux finishing you've chosen. Don't take the application of the base coat lightly. It's the basis for how your completed project will look. If your base coat isn't applied smoothly and uniformly the results can be less than desirable.
Other interior painting styles can always be used in combination with traditional brush or spray painted areas. You can create your own unique tone and décor by learning to accent and compliment your rooms using these interior painting styles.
