Preparing Exterior House Paint

It’s always fun when you are looking forward to something so much, you can’t wait for it to start.  And your exterior house painting project is no exception. Now that you have the colors picked out, have hired a contractor you feel good about, and are ready to go, the exterior house paint for your home can’t be done fast enough.  This is why it might be a little upsetting if your painter comes to you and tells you that some work is going to have to be done before you get to see the gorgeous colors you picked out.  This is a common situation in the house painting process, but not to worry; if you want the job done right, certain things have to happen first.

Exterior House Paint

Before you can see any work with the exterior house paint, the house is going to have to be gone over with a fine toothed comb, so to speak.  Any damage to the exterior of the house needs to be fixed before paint is applied.  If it’s not, you run the risk of having your new paint peel or just not last as long as it should.  If you have hired a good contractor, he or she is going to explain all of these to you and give you specific examples of where your house needs to be repaired.  However, until then, here are some of the minor details you can expect to hear about.

Your house needs to be in the most raw state possible before exterior house paint can be applied.  If you have an aluminum, vinyl, concrete, or stucco sided house, all that means is that it has to be cleaned well before applying the paint.  Wood houses are going to require a bit more work.  Removing old paint, sanding, and smoothing any rough spots are imperative to a good finish for the new paint.  Your contractor may use epoxy filler if there are any serious cracks or problems with the wood.  A stain blocking wood primer may be necessary to ensure that the paint covers any oil stains in the wood and looks as it should.
