Enduring Floors -Tile Flooring Panels
When you talk about tile flooring panels, you can actually be talking about two different steps in floor laying. The first kind of floor panels refer to the subfloor covering that raises the floor and is used as the underlayment for the tile itself. The second kind of tile flooring panels refers to panels of preset tile that you can install on the floor rather than laying the tile one piece at a time. Both types of panels are important for laying a tile floor that won’t give you any trouble for many years.
When you are ready to lay floor tile, the first thing you have to do is evaluate the floor. Tile has to be laid on something and that something is usually plywood or cement board. This is called the underlayment and the name describes exactly what it does – it gives the support tile needs. Tile has to be on a sturdy surface, otherwise shifting floors can cause cracks in the tile or grout. In fact, an uneven or vibrating floor is one of the major causes of floor tile problems.
Tile Flooring Panels
If you are building a new house, the underlayment should be installed so it fits together tightly. You want to nail the floor no more than every 4 inches apart throughout the plywood sheet. This includes around the edges and then across the plywood. To make the tile flooring panels sturdy so the floor doesn’t vibrate, the best technique is to stagger the sheets of plywood. You shouldn’t line up all the seams so they run in a straight line.
The term tile flooring panels also includes sheets of tile that can be installed with the sheet intact. The panels are made in different styles. Ceramic tile flooring panels are tiles attached to a mesh or hard underlayment. Instead of installing one tile at a time, you can install one panel at a time. Vinyl tile panels come in sheets that can be laid on underlayment. Once again, you are installing multiple tiles at once.
Tile flooring panels are designed to serve several special needs. Obviously, the panels are time saving. But panels are great for installing over a floor that’s uneven or over existing tile you don’t want to remove. Once the tile panels are installed, they look just like tile that’s been laid one tile at a time. You don’t need as many tools to install tile flooring panels as you need to install individual tiles. The panels are easy to trim for placement along wall edges.
