When you see the first signs of mildew on your shower's grout, you might wonder if cleaning mildew from grout is even possible.  Not only does it look like a lot of work, but the mildew can also seem like it's etched into the grout for good.  But when you know the three steps to cleaning mildew from grout that builders and professional housekeepers know, you don't have to be afraid of a little mildew anymore.

The first step in cleaning mildew from grout is to buy a hard bristle scrub brush and some basic household cleaner or abrasive cleanser.  Get into your tub and start scrubbing.  You will want to remove as much surface mildew as you can during this step.  This is not going to be easy or quick as these grout stains have probably been building up for weeks, months, or even years.  Wear protective gloves when you do this and make sure that your clothing isn't something you mind ruining in the process.  Scrub and rinse and then scrub again until you find that your grout is as clean as it's going to get.

Next, you will probably notice that you still have stains in the grout - those tend to be hard water stains that have set in.  By taking some vinegar and some paper towels, you can begin to break these stains down.  Soak the towels in vinegar when cleaning mildew from grout.  These towels should be pushed onto the stained surfaces and allowed to sit until the stains begin to fade.  This can take many hours, so be certain the grout remains wet with vinegar.  The chemicals in the vinegar help to break down the stains.  Rinse the grout and then you're ready for the final step.

After rinsing the shower down of the vinegar with the cleanser again, you will want to go back over the grout with a dilute mix of bleach.  This will help to kill off any remaining mildew and prevent it from coming back.
