Remodeling experts differ on what material makes the best kitchen counters but the reality is that what is best for one person may not be the best for another. There are substantial differences in the look, feel, care and cost for the various materials that can be used.

There are several popular materials that are generally used for the best kitchen counters. These materials are natural stone, solid surface and ceramic tile. Each of these has advantages and disadvantages so it is critical that you fully understand all about each one before making a final choice for your kitchen.

Best Kitchen Counters

Natural stone kitchen counters include those made of granite, marble and slate. Granite is generally the most expensive of all countertop materials but it is also extremely durable and resistant to scratches. Marble is also quite pricey and requires a great deal more care because it scratches and stains easily. Slate is the most economical of the natural stone options and because of its combination of affordability and durability is considered one of the best kitchen counters available in natural stone.

Solid surface counters are man made materials that are extremely durable. They are non-porous so they are not prone to stains and although they can pick up scratches and burn marks those are easily repaired. Many kitchen designers feel solid surface are the best kitchen counters because they are durable, reasonably priced and available in so many different colors.

Ceramic tile counters are quite durable and affordable as well. Plus they can be created in many different styles, colors and textures. They are generally easy to install and maintain but it is important to keep the grout lines well sealed to prevent them from staining or gathering too much dirt. They are often preferred as the best kitchen counters by homeowners who want a durable surface at a reasonable cost.
