5 Tips for Getting the Right Asphalt Roof Shingles
June 1, 2010
Asphalt roof shingles do a lot more than keep the water out of
your house. They also can make a strong decorator statement and
provide years of enjoyment. Here are 5 tips for picking the right
asphalt roof shingles:
- Select the right color and texture for your
home. Asphalt roof shingles come in a wide range of colors
beyond the typical gray and black. Before buying the same color you
have, consider adding a little contrast against your exterior
siding or brick colors. Matching your shutters or patio color is
another option. In warm climates, try a light color to reduce heat
build up.
- Find the right
roofing contractor. Look for a contractor who
takes the time to educate you about the various asphalt roof
shingle brands. Ask for references from customers who had their
asphalt roof shingles installed several years ago and check to see
how they are wearing.
- Think durability and warranty. Not
all asphalt shingles are made alike, so make sure you do research
on the manufacturer and the product's warranty. Some offer
twenty-year warranties, while others are lifetime.
- Ask about roof flashing and special
installations. The flashing that secures your roof around
windows and chimneys is critical to protecting against water
infiltration. Ask the contractor for details on how flashing is
installed, particularly with roof angles, curves or steep
pitches.
- Don't shop by price alone. Price is
just one factor. If you're looking for a long lasting roof, pay
attention to the durability of the materials as well as the
reputation of the contractor who will install them.
