10 Tips for Cleaning Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile can be an elegant addition to any home, but it does require special care! For some, the beauty of ceramic tile is worth the cleaning and careful treatment, but for others, it simply proves to be too much. Here are a few tips on cleaning and treatment of ceramic tile to help you decide if you want to pursue this flooring option.

How to Clean Ceramic Tile

Regular cleaning and care of ceramic tile keeps it looking its best. Following are some detailed maintenance tips:

  • Sweep the floor often, and use the thin corner attachment of a vacuum cleaner to reach the corners and side areas. Don't use a vacuum with a "beater brush" on the tile--this can lead to scratches.
  • Mop the floors regularly with a good grout and tile cleaner. Rinse very well.
  • After mopping, wipe the floor with a soft rag to prevent water spots and film buildup.
  • Check the label before purchasing a cleaner, as some products are meant for use on only specific types of flooring or tile.
  • Never use scouring powder, steel wool, or other abrasive materials on your tile.
  • Avoid bleach and ammonia--they can discolor the grout.
  • Tile may chip or break when subjected to a great deal of force. When moving furniture, call in heavy muscle to help you keep the legs of the furniture from banging on the tile floor. When you have your furniture in place, use cloth protectors to guard against tile damage.
  • Caulk between your tiles after grouting to prevent water damage and keep the whole floor looking its best.
  • Should you seal your tile floor? Sealing helps prevent collection of dirt, protects the tile from spills, and may prevent discoloration.
  • Certain types of ceramic tile can stain very easily, so be prepared to quickly clean up any spills. Keep a stash of soft dishtowels tucked away just for this purpose.

Choosing Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile has been in use for centuries, and graces everything from the largest cathedrals to the smallest kitchens. People enjoy it not only for its beauty, but for its durability--and though keeping it properly cleaned and maintained may take some extra effort from time to time, many homeowners feel the upkeep is worth it.

The design and style choices in ceramic tile are virtually endless. No matter your needs, you are sure to find a ceramic tile that gives your home that classic, timeless look.
