Build a Cement Decl

It is easy to build a cement deck in most locations around the exterior of your home. The style of deck can differ by thickness, finish, size or decorative imprint but regardless of what you choose to do with it the basic steps are the same.

When you build a cement deck you must first determine the size and shape you want so that you can calculate the amount of cement, rebar reinforcement and other materials necessary. It also allows you to determine the type and shape of forms you will need for the cement pour.

Build a Cement Deck

Check the building codes in your community to determine the required construction components for a cement deck of varying depths. For example, in many areas you do not need to use rebar reinforcement if the cement is less than eight to ten inches thick. You should still seriously consider using rebar reinforcement anyway just to make the deck that much stronger. The next step is to design and build the forms that will shape the cement deck the way you want it. Wood forms are traditional and very functional but many cement contractors are now turning to foam-type forms because they are easier to install and take down.

When the time comes to do the pour to build a cement deck it is important that the conditions be right and you have the tools and labor you need to handle it. In general, you should only pour cement if the outside temperature is above about 45 degrees and below about 90 degrees or so. You will also need enough people on site to manage the flow of cement and get it into place quickly before it has time to set up too firmly. If you plan to imprint or include a design in the surface of the cement then be sure to have those tools close at hand as well.
