Create Your Own Oasis With Horizontal Privacy Fences
Picture a privacy fence in your head. Or, just picture any fence at all in your mind. For most people, the fence they picture is one with vertical slats that are very close together. This is especially true of privacy fences, as the sole purpose of privacy fences is that the slats are close enough that peeping neighbors can't spy through them. Even if you pictured a horizontal fence, you probably pictured one that is commonly found on a farm or in a country setting: these generally have three horizontal slats and sometimes have a sort of chain link fence on the back side, something not at all conducive to blocking out nosy neighbors. But few people will picture horizontal privacy fences, especially the more stylish types that are commonly available now.
Horizontal Privacy Fences
While horizontal privacy fences are nothing new – after all, they have been used on ranches and farms for hundreds of years – they are not very common in today's neighborhoods. Horizontal privacy fences are just as effective as vertical privacy fences, and they are often more attractive. This is because they are different from the common vertical fences you see surrounding so many homes and back yard pools. Horizontal privacy fences are made out of a variety of materials, including steel, wood, and bamboo. Each of these materials adds its own degree of style, cost, and challenge to your fencing project.
Steel horizontal privacy fences are very nice and they are very sturdy. However, steel is commonly a very expensive material, and it will most definitely be quite heavy. So unless you have a large budget, a propensity to metal or steel construction, and a very strong back, steel can be a big challenge. Wooden horizontal privacy fences are cheaper and possibly easier to install. They add a very rustic feeling to a yard, but when painted they can look quite classic or even modern. Wood is hard to keep up with, however, especially in wet climates. Another option is investing in the Asian-influenced bamboo horizontal privacy fences. Bamboo is a better material to use environmentally speaking since it grows back faster than most types of wood. It can be a little on the expensive side, but it is quite light which makes it easier to install. But most horizontal privacy fences made of bamboo are made as panels, which means it really is better for small areas than large ones.
