What You Need to Know About Constructing Door Jambs
At some point during the life of your home, you will need to think about constructing door jambs. Whether your door frames have been broken, moisture has seeped in, or you simply want to rework the design of your doors, you have a number of things to consider when constructing door jambs. Here are the basics to handling this project on your own. It's not as difficult as you might think, so even if you have minimal remodeling experience, you should be able to handle the work:
The first thing you will want to do before you begin constructing door jambs is to measure out the current door jamb pieces that are in place. You might want to draw light pencil lines along the areas where the pieces of wood meet the actual door frame too. This will help you align the new pieces of wood that you put into place when you reconstruct the door jamb. You might also want to make note of any areas on the current door jamb that are worn so that you can make sure that you fortify these areas with additional coats of paint or varnish, if possible.

Next, you will want to remove the old door jamb pieces in order to clear the way for the new pieces you want to put into place. Be careful as you do this because you might want to use these pieces for reference as you cut the new pieces. If you can not save them, that's okay. After you have removed the pieces, you will want to remove any paint or varnish. Then, you will want to sand down the surfaces to ensure you have a good fit of the new pieces against the frame of the door.
Finally, you will want to nail the pieces of the new jamb into place. When constructing door jambs, it's essential that you nail these pieces flush to each other in order to create a level place for the door to rest when it is closed – and so that the lock aligns with the right place on the inside of the door.
