Environmentally friendly natural pesticides are beneficial for everyone.  Pesticides are a hazard to animals, humans and the environment in general.  Anytime you can control insects by using natural products, everyone wins.  It used to be the natural pesticides weren’t very effective, but research has improved the products to the point where they are often just as effective as strong chemicals.  Technology has created powders and sprays using natural ingredients making application easy.

Organic gardeners have long used environmentally friendly natural pesticides, because chemicals can be harmful as well as polluting.   When you use chemicals in your yard, they are absorbed into the ground and eventually make it to the earth’s water supplies.  Water treatment plants have elaborate systems to filter the chemicals out, but trace amounts are considered acceptable.  The chemicals you use in your yard also increase your family’s risk of exposure.

Environmentally Friendly Natural Pesticides

There are now many kinds of environmentally friendly natural pesticides known to kill certain insects.  Some of them you can make yourself and some you can buy.   Chemical free gardening can get a bit complicated at times, but there are some products that are commonly recognized as effective.  Some people enjoy mixing their own natural pesticides at home to keep with the concept of true organic gardening.

Some of the homemade pesticides include using hot peppers and garlic steeped in hot water.  You can find recipes for using tobacco water or pure soap.  But in recognition of the desires of organic gardeners for environmentally natural pesticides, you can now buy many natural garden sprays and powders.  Following is a brief list just to give you an idea of the options available.

• Insect soap
• Neem Oil
• Bacillus Thuringiensis
• Hot Pepper Wax
• Diatomaceous Powder
• Rotenone-Pyrethrin Spray
• Lime

Diatomaceous powder is actually made from the diatom fossilized remains.  It prevents infestations by earwigs, centipedes and silverfish among other insects.  Each of the natural pesticides works against a variety of pests including roaches, moths, ants and even fleas.  Some are applied directly to the plant to prevent leaf eating insects or insects that lay eggs on plant leaves.

Keeping the environment as safe as possible is the goal of many gardeners.  Chemical pesticides can cause damage to the water supplies as mentioned, but they can also kill animals that eat garden and lawn pests.  Using environmentally friendly natural pesticides means you protect more than just your plants.  You actually protect the whole ecosystem.
