How to Use Accent Lighting

Accent lighting used to be reserved for art galleries and other high style areas, but homeowners have now realized that it can be used to accent their own homes as well.  By adding this kind of lighting to your home, you will be able to draw attention to certain areas or create places where guests can congregate.  You can also use accent lighting to add drama to a certain part of the house.  With these possibilities, it’s easy to see why using accent lights have become so popular.

The main use for accent lighting in many homes is to draw attention to a certain decorative feature.  For example, if you have a painting on your wall that you want to show off, you might want to install accent lighting that directs light to it.  Or you might want to use lighting at the sides of the piece to reflect the texture of the painting itself.  This kind of lighting also works well for other pieces of art that you might have – sculptures, ethnic pieces, etc.  Whatever you want to draw attention to, you can use an accent light structure to accomplish your goal.

Aside from the accenting of art, accent lighting can also be used for creating spaces in which people can gather during parties and get-togethers.  For example, if you have a bar area, you might want to add accent lighting that can be turned on when you are entertaining in that space.  Or if you have a bar stool setup in your kitchen, you can add accent lights to add light to the area without lighting up the entire kitchen.  You might also have an area where you keep a piano or other musical equipment where accent lights might be helpful and yet subtle.

Drama has always been associated with accent lighting as the lighting tends to be in addition to the actual lighting that’s installed in the home.  If you have a certain room in your home that you want to highlight, accent lighting can be installed.  In your bedroom, for example, you might want to add accent lighting via sconce fixtures that will add lighting as well as bit of style and dramatic flair.  Or you can add these sconce accent lights to your hallways to help guide people through your home.
