Do-It-Yourself Painting Tips

If you are planning to do a painting project, it helps to think first about some of the painting tips offered by professional painters.  Painting is one of the most common and popular projects homeowners can do to spruce up their homes or even change the entire look and style.  Painting a home is also one of the easiest projects for homeowners to attempt themselves. With just a little advice from professional painters anyone can make the entire project go more smoothly and end up with better overall results.

Any decent collection of painting tips will include this one – surface preparation is critical to your success.  It is tempting to jump right in and begin the actual painting. Most homeowners want to do this because painting is fun, it is easy to see the progress, and it can be a very creative process.  Resist this urge, though, because if you do not take the time to do the right surface preparation then your new paint will not look right, it might not adhere to the surface, and you’ll likely end up doing the whole thing over again. 

Painting Tips

The next critical tip is to select the right paint for the job at hand.  Latex paint is the easiest to apply and clean. The newest 100% acrylic latex paints are extremely durable and attractive.  Even better, they can be used on practically any common household surface.  Always use the best quality paint you can afford, because cheaper paints usually do not go on as well or last as long.

You should also invest in the right tools for the job.  Use plastic or heavy fabric drop cloths to cover and protect furniture, carpet, and anything else you might want to protect from paint stains.  Take the time to mask off trim work, windows, and baseboards to speed up the painting of large surface areas.  Use new roller covers rather than trying to recycle old ones, to ensure the smoothest application of paint.  Also make sure to use the right brushes for the trim and detail work – angled bristles are best for cutting in edgework and painting in small areas.  If you follow these basic painting tips you will end up with very nice end results.
